Some leaves still cling to the tree’s branches in one last desperate attempt of nature to keep away the impending winter. Slowly, temperatures have started to drop, despite the sun’s valiant effort to keep them at bay. However, as soon as the sun is gone, the bitter chill of an ice-cold winter starts to wander the streets.

The original stray dog roleplay has returned!
Canine Controversy (Version 2) was formed in March 2011 in response to popular demand that the original be brought back. Unfortunately, access to the original CC site was restricted, inspiring old staff and long-term members alike to band together in pursuit of a revival. With the blessing of many former members of the community, the new Canine Controversy picks up three years after the old one left off, with a blank slate for new characters and plenty of opportunity for returning ones.

Old District
Old Museum Closed up years ago, the Old Museum is one of the quieter places in Cairoco. If you find the door ajar in the back, you can weave through the offices in the back and come out into one of the many exhibits. One room is dedicated solely to the Egyptians, the exhibit filled with glass encased pottery and artifacts. Many of the rooms are like this, including one on the Romans and another on the Incas. In addition to a room dedicated to the evolution of weaponry, you can find one chronicling the trends in art. Anything you want to see, is in this museum.
The Clock Tower A piece of Cairoco's history left to rot. Styled similar to London's famed Big Ben, the inside is a labyrinth of stairwells and rotting wood floors. The inner mechanisms have long stopped working, allowing the gears and wires on the top floor to rust and crumble. The clock's glass, once clear and bright, is now dirty and dusty. If you managed to get up there and clean a spot on the glass, you can see the whole of the Old District, and beyond. Watch out for weak floorboards and missing steps, though; this place is a disaster waiting to happen. Many a great dog has fallen to their death in this very building.
Cemetery A little gravel road off in the far corner of the Old District leads to a small, decrepit church that had been in nature's clutches for a long time. The doors are missing, many of the windows blown out, and inside plants and trees are starting to grow. Only the stone altar is in good condition, with a small ivy plant winding up it. Surrounding this little chapel is a large graveyard, over a century old, filled with wind-worn headstones and monuments of all types. Watch out for holes, and be wary of spirits.
Abandoned Warehouse No one remembers what the warehouse used to hold. Now it's a wreck of concrete and cardboard, and monstrous piles of rags gathered by canines and hobos over the years. Above the main level is a grid of concrete support, surprisingly stable despite the elements. Just don't fall- the chances of landing on a pile of rags instead of a pile of concrete is not very high. There are offices in the back, and a few random stairways, but nothing terribly interesting unless you want to hide in a desk.
Office Building The Office Building is just that- an office building. The two front doors stand enough ajar to allow a few dogs through at a time, leading to a decaying front lobby that had been looted a long time ago. Hallways lead in either direction, connecting to more hallways, and in a few instances stairs. Random room branch out from every hallway, some of them large and filled with broken cubicles, others just containing a large table and a few rotting chairs. The hallways extend up five floors, each one connected to an old elevator that had smashed to the bottom of the shaft years ago. Almost every window is blown out, and the rooms connected to them have flourishing bird colonies. A good place to hide, if you know your way around. But don't get lost.
Metropolitan Area (2 sub-boards) One of the busiest areas of the city, the Metropolitan Area houses many local businesses, offices, schools and apartments. Large boulevards are treacherous even for humans to cross, but thankfully there are ample side-streets and alleys forming an awkward network from one end of the district to the other. While it is possible to get lost amongst the crowds, these are also the sort of humans least likely to accept a strange dog wandering around. Fatcat Alley and Chinatown are both noteworthy parts of the Metropolitan Area, especially for a hungry dog.
Subway One set of wide concrete stairs connects the world above to the aging subway station below. Its tiled walls are cracked and stained, its cold pavement in urgent need of a good paint job. A few kiosks sell tickets to the unprepared passenger, but due to budged constraints many rest unstaffed during everything but rush hour. Trains hurtle past with seemingly little warning, except to those dogs that can read the LED schedules hanging from the ceiling. Walkways line either side of the tracks, plunging into the darkness of tunnels to either side. Beware! There is nothing to stop one from walking straight into harm’s way.. or from being pushed.
Hatley Park Hatley Park has never been in perfect condition- the grass is always a bit too long, the benches somewhat warped, but it’s always serviceable. There are plenty of trees for shade, a variety of playground equipment, playing courts, and small gardens for amusement, and an ample supply of children in the afternoons. Moss Creek winds through the area; an enterprising canine can follow the creek as it swells and heads eventually out of the city and into the forest.
Rideau Canal The Canal is a fixture as old as Cairoco itself. On either side of the canal may be sidewalks or grass, stone walls or a dangerous drop, depending on how deep into the city one wanders. The steady sound of rushing water, however, remains constant.
Underground Kennels Many years ago, humans built the kennels to take cruel advantage of the local stray population. Purportedly an animal control center, the building aboveground- with its grassy runs and pleasant interior- was little more than a ruse. A group of disreputable people converted the basement into an underground complex: rooms full of floor-to-ceiling cages lining the one-way path countless dogs took to the fenced fighting pit. Thankfully, the humans were discovered and removed. Now their hollow shell of horror is all that remains.
Sewers There's one entrance to the Sewers- a single door that opens to a round corridor, leading down into a wet, drippy darkness. The humans don't really check the sewers anymore, so the rats call it their home. Tunnels of all dimensions spider out in complicated webs under the city, but they all lead back to the same place. A massive, open room in which all of the pipes empty into. It's never full, and since there are so many clogged pipes it's often only damp. A single light from a man-hole staves away the darkness.
Railroad Station The railroad station had big ambitions that never came to be. A single track extends in either direction, broken and rusting after the years of no repair. But the station itself was something to behold in its heyday, and even now in disrepair it strikes an inspiring picture. Three stories with a massive lobby, there are numerous rooms and courts that were fashioned to have important guests that never came. Grandiose staircases lead up to each floor, were cushioned seats and velvet covers are thrown about by beasts and wind.
The Old Barn If anything is a symbol of the evils carried out in Cairoco, it is the Barn. ItÂ’s been more than thirty years since the wooden building saw livestock or repairs, since it fell into abandon and was seized by the infamous Mafia. Whatever paint once protected the exterior is long gone, but the faded red roof stands stubborn testament to the seas of blood spilled within. The main body of the Barn is a large dirt room, with ancient hay littering the floor and stacked high up one corner. Through the back, the remnants of stalls offer sorry shelter considering all of the broken wooden boards. The BarnÂ’s most interesting feature is its loft- accessible only by a wooden ladder in the main room, with a window looking over the front of the territory. The building itself is surrounded by an overgrown wheat field, green in times of rain and golden yellow in times of drought.
Bear Lake (1 sub-board) Moss Creek drains, eventually, into Bear Lake. One need not follow the creek to find the lake though- such a large body of water nestled within the forest is difficult not to notice. Humans haven't taken an interest in it since their nuclear plant (the pipes to which still lead away from the lake) was abandoned. This makes it the perfect haven for a weary traveler. But be cautious- creatures of all humors are likely to stop by for a drink.
Rubble Pit An amassment of broken concrete slabs lays where an old building used to stand. A pool of rancid water sits at the center of this decrepit scene, and a faint smell of asbestos still lingers. Stories from the old days tell of caves beneath the rubble that once housed an inbred empire of albino dogs.
Construction Site There were high hopes for this plot of land, but all fell through due to an exhausted budget. The humans in charge left it, quite literally, to the dogs. Even the broken down CAT machines remain, overgrown by wild kudzu and altogether in disrepair. All that is left of the structure is the foundation and piles of lumber and other materials in a pathetic display of what could have been.
Forest - 1 Viewing Preceding the foothills is an old forest laced with overgrown hiking trails for the adventurous jogger, or a canine determined to get lost. The forest is heavily shaded but for the occasional clearing, and the persistent gurgle of small creeks is hard to escape. As you gain in elevation the trees turn from birch and maple to hardy firs and cedars, and it's at this point where a silence begins to grow.
Foothills Theres not much to see in the expanse of the foothills apart from the mountains looming in the distance and the forest behind. The trees have had their hold on the land broken, replaced by and endless stretch of brush and grasses and rolling hills. Small creatures and larger game alike inhabit the land, making the area livable, but not particularly comfortable, for those willing to chase down their prey. The occasional house disrupts the dingy horizon, structures built and subsequently abandoned by the humans that attempted to make a living there in days gone by.
The Mountains (2 sub-boards) Between the foothills and the desert stands a great barrier of rock, towering higher than any of the city’s buildings could possibly reach. While they provide a backdrop of majesty against the grungy city scene, they are not without their own threats. Precipices and lethal falls await those who wander haphazardly into the mountains’ depths, as well as wild beasts that make the hostile environment their home. Fortunately, shelter is a common commodity, taking the form of great granite slabs and the occasional vegetated hollow. Life is hard, but it is possible.
The Badlands (1 sub-board) Trailing down the dry side of the mountain, land and vegetation quickly fall into disrepair. Years of thirst have made life impossible for all creatures that cannot withstand the winds and temperature extremes, so there is not a whole lot to look at other than scrub plants and dusty earth. Some blessed areas very near the range’s base could pass for a water-starved field, but the farther one travels from the comfort of civilization the more desolate, and desperate, the brush becomes.
